Business Interfaces

Interaction between companies is becoming increasingly relevant due to globalized value chains and generally lower in-house production depth. This includes efficient data exchange in supply chain management (SCM). A wide range of software tools is used to ensure transparent and efficient processing.

Using standards is a necessary condition. Only standardized communication enables effective external data exchange. To meet these requirements, standardized data formats are used that support reliable and consistent transfer.

The term Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) refers to (partially) automated and system-independent data interaction between sending and receiving entities. A common example is electronic invoicing, which is faster, more secure, and easier to process than paper-based workflows.

As the basis for EDI, interfaces ensure standardized processing of business data. A widely used standard is EDIFACT (Electronic Data Interchange For Administration, Commerce and Transport). It is already used worldwide for business data exchange. Importantly, EDIFACT defines the data format, not the transmission medium. This means EDIFACT messages can be sent via different channels, as long as sender and receiver can process the standardized format through suitable software applications.

Alternatively, Extensible Markup Language (XML) can be used instead of EDIFACT. XML is also a strong option for processing business data and, particularly in web technologies, a widely adopted standard for efficient data handling.

What benefits does this create for your company?

A high share of electronic data exchange delivers clear efficiency advantages compared to traditional paper-based processes. Since almost every organization and business partner uses electronic data processing systems, digital communication is a logical step that removes media discontinuities and long latency times, such as those in postal workflows.

The broad adoption of the standards mentioned above supports smooth data exchange, shortens process lead times, and frees time and personnel resources for higher-value tasks.

It also simplifies integration of your transaction data into your software systems, significantly improving analytical capabilities. This data can, for example, be integrated into a data warehouse for extensive electronic analysis.
